During a meeting of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD), the Maltese members of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) – General Workers’ Union (GWU) President Jason Deguara and economist Professor Philip von Brockdorff – updated the social partners on their work within the Committee and on the activities of the EESC itself. Through a presentation and discussion, the meeting also explored further opportunities for collaboration between the EESC and the MCESD.
Speaking following the meeting, Mr Deguara explained that he presented his work within the EESC, highlighting that his primary focus is on social issues, particularly those affecting workers.
“Everything revolves around our members. My priority is to ensure that Malta’s agenda is safeguarded as much as possible and that the Maltese voice is given the prominence it deserves within the Committee,” said the GWU President.
During another part of the MCESD meeting, the Malta Fiscal Advisory Council (MFAC) presented a detailed analysis of Malta’s 2025 Macroeconomic and Fiscal Outturn, together with its Economic and Fiscal Forecasts for 2026.
The presentation was delivered by the Chairperson of the Malta Fiscal Advisory Council, Dr Moira Catania, together with the Council’s Chief Economist, Mr Gilmour Camilleri.
MCESD Chairperson Maria Micallef underlined the importance of holding regular meetings between the MCESD and the Malta Fiscal Advisory Council so that its data and analysis continue to strengthen social dialogue and contribute to more informed policymaking.
The social partners also participated in an extensive discussion, during which they shared their views and proposals on the issues presented. They emphasised the importance of Malta continuing to strengthen its economy while creating more opportunities for both people and businesses.
The discussion also covered sustainable economic growth, productivity, business competitiveness, the diversification of Gozo’s economy, energy security, quality of life and well-being, as well as how these priorities can further strengthen the country in the years ahead.
The social partners agreed that regular reports of this nature are valuable in supporting evidence-based discussions and helping to address Malta’s future economic challenges.
The Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection, the Hon. Keith Azzopardi Tanti, thanked the social partners for their continued commitment within the MCESD and reaffirmed that the Government will continue to listen to the views and contributions of all stakeholders.
