GWU hosts Krishna Janmashtami Festival

A message of inclusion, respect and solidarity among all workers

The General Workers’ Union (GWU) once again hosted the celebration of Krishna Janmashtami, an important festival for Malta’s Hindu community commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna.

The event brought together members of the Hindu community, third-country nationals and people from different communities in an atmosphere of unity, respect and celebration. The occasion also provided an opportunity to further strengthen the relationship between the GWU and communities of foreign workers living and working in Malta.

Speaking during the event, GWU Secretary General Kevin Camilleri said that the Union is, and will remain, open to all workers, including those coming from third countries. He stressed that the work being carried out by the GWU to reach out to these workers and provide them with the support they need is delivering the desired results.

“The GWU is the home of all workers. We want every worker, regardless of where they come from, to find a Union that listens to them, respects them and stands by them when they need support. The growing trust we are seeing among these communities encourages us to further strengthen this work,” Camilleri said.

For his part, GWU Deputy Secretary General Kevin Abela emphasised the importance of workers standing together and not allowing anyone to discourage them from seeking the support and representation to which they are entitled.

“Together, we have achieved a great deal and have had several success stories. Our message is clear: do not let anyone discourage you. We are here to represent every worker, regardless of their nationality,” Abela said.

The GWU’s presence at events such as Krishna Janmashtami goes beyond a cultural celebration. It is a tangible demonstration of the Union’s commitment to building relationships based on trust, respect and solidarity, while continuing to work to ensure that every worker in Malta feels welcomed, represented and protected.
