The economy and Malta Vision 2050 at the centre of discussions

Economic transformation and Malta Vision 2050 were at the centre of discussions during a meeting between the General Workers’ Union (GWU) and the Minister for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, Silvio Schembri. The meeting formed part of an ongoing series of meetings being held by the GWU with Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries.

GWU Secretary General Kevin Camilleri stressed the importance of maintaining the strong momentum generated by the launch of Malta Vision 2050.

Speaking about the shift towards digitalisation, Camilleri highlighted the need for continuous training and upskilling of workers who, in his words, “need to learn how to change” with the times. This is essential to enable workers to improve their income while increasing the quality and value of their work.

The GWU Secretary General also referred to discussions held within the MCESD on the European Union’s Pay Transparency Directive, stressing the importance of minimising the potential for abuse as much as possible.

For his part, Minister Silvio Schembri explained that the implementation of Malta Vision 2050 is a responsibility shared across the entire Government, with a dedicated unit within the Office of the Prime Minister coordinating the work towards its implementation. In this context, he said that the GWU also has an important role to play, noting that the Union has been highly engaged and has provided strong feedback on the vision.

Minister Schembri also stated: “We must ensure that the continued growth of our economy is reflected in ever-improving conditions for Maltese and Gozitan workers. This is what we discussed – how the growth of sectors in our country, including in terms of productivity, can continue to translate into better conditions for workers.”

Also present at the meeting on behalf of the GWU were President Jason Deguara, Deputy Secretary General Kevin Abela, Government, Public Entities and Health Section Secretary Kendrick Bondin, Professionals, Finance and Services Section Secretary Riccarda Darmanin, Metal and Construction Section Secretary Jesmond Marshall, and Technology, Electronics and Communications Section Secretary Jason Gatt.
