“The vision is there, but this is a journey” – GWU Secretary General Kevin Camilleri

“If we want to get to 2076, we need to start today.” This was one of the key messages delivered by General Workers’ Union (GWU) Secretary General Kevin Camilleri while taking part in a panel discussion during the State of the Nation conference.

Speaking during the panel themed “How could the Maltese Nation change over the next 50 years?”, Camilleri stressed the need for the country to start thinking ahead about the changes taking place and, above all, about where we want to be in the years to come.

He identified the digital transformation as one of the greatest challenges ahead, particularly Artificial Intelligence, which is already becoming an increasingly prominent part of our daily lives and the world of work.

Camilleri also spoke about the Malta Vision 2050, acknowledging that it will need to continue evolving over time because, in his words, “everything is dynamic”.

The GWU Secretary General said that in the future he would like to see more inclusive workplaces, greater career development opportunities for workers, and increased flexibility at work to further strengthen work-life balance.

“It is not enough to talk about these things; we need to truly start putting them into practice. If we want to get to 2076, we need to start today. The vision is there, but then there is a path ahead. This is a journey,” Camilleri said.

He concluded by emphasising the importance of education, continuous training and skills development to ensure that workers are able to adapt to the transformations that will continue to shape the world of work in the years ahead.
