During a meeting between the central administration of the General Workers’ Union (GWU) and the Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, discussions focused on key issues relating to industrial relations, including the crucial role of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD).
Addressing the meeting, GWU Secretary General Kevin Camilleri said he was pleased that the first organisation Minister Azzopardi Tanti met following his appointment was the GWU.
He spoke about the GWU’s contribution within the MCESD and stressed the importance of ensuring that discussions and policy decisions are underpinned by sound research.
The GWU Secretary General also highlighted digitalisation and the challenges it will bring, emphasising the need for workers and their representatives to be well prepared to respond to these developments.
For his part, Minister Azzopardi Tanti said that coming from a working-class family has given him a better understanding of the realities faced by workers. He added that his professional background as an accountant also enables him to better appreciate the challenges encountered by businesses.
The Minister said he looks forward to further strengthening the work of the MCESD and advancing social dialogue. He also noted that the Government’s Int Malta manifesto sets out ambitious goals aimed at improving the quality of life of the Maltese and Gozitan people.
“I look forward to working with the GWU, among others, to ensure that our ambitious commitments are delivered,” Minister Azzopardi Tanti concluded.
Also present for the meeting were MCESD Chairperson Maria Micallef, GWU Deputy Secretary General Kevin Abela, GWU President Jason Deguara and GWU Financial Consultant Robert Borg.
Prior to the meeting, Minister Azzopardi Tanti visited the various sections within the Workers’ Memorial Building, where he met GWU employees and officials, as well as journalists from the Union Print newsroom.
