Young Visionary at the Helm of GWU Maritime and Aviation Section

At just 26 years old, Jurgen Azzopardi, a resident of Siġġiewi, has made history as
the youngest Secretary of the Maritime and Aviation Section within the General
Workers’ Union (GWU). With an unwavering commitment to improving workers’
conditions and benefits, Jurgen’s journey within the GWU is a testament to
dedication and perseverance.

An Early Start in Advocacy

Jurgen’s career began at the age of 16, balancing work and part-time studies. Even
in his first job, his passion for workers’ rights was evident as he took on the roles of
representative and shop steward. His efforts didn’t go unnoticed. Later, upon
switching jobs, he remained active within the GWU, progressing to become
Secretary of the Youth Section. In this role, he championed the involvement of young
people in trade unionism, fostering a new generation of advocates for workers’ rights.
His recent election as Secretary of the Maritime and Aviation Section is a new
chapter in his impactful journey.

Inspiration Behind the Mission

Reflecting on his initial motivation, Jurgen shares his drive to address and resolve
workplace issues through collective effort. From fixing longstanding issues at his first
workplace to striving for continuous improvement in workers’ rights, his commitment
has been unshakeable. “Something that gives me great satisfaction is seeing that I
improve conditions and bring more benefits to our members,” he stated.
Qualities that Lead.

Jurgen attributes much of his success to his ability to listen. “It is important that we
give our members enough opportunity and we listen to them in such a way that we
understand what they are going through,” he remarked. He sees his role as a
collaborative effort, working closely with company committees to address the
demands of their members.

A Vision for the Future

As Secretary, Jurgen’s aim is clear—to build on the work of his predecessors and
further enhance benefits, wages, and conditions for members. The GWU has long
championed auto-enrolment into trade unions, a policy Jurgen fully supports. This
proposal ensures workers have representation from their very first day on the job,
addressing challenges and safeguarding rights.

A Day in the Life

A typical day for Jurgen starts early with a quick update on the day’s news before
heading to work. His schedule is packed with meetings with members and
companies, and he makes it a point to unwind in the evening with physical activity
like jogging or walking.
