GWU warns against any delay in Pay Transparency Directive implementation

The General Workers’ Union (GWU) strongly objects to calls by employer organisations to postpone the EU Pay Transparency Directive, stressing that there is no justification for any delay.

Adopted on 24 April 2023, the directive sets a transposition deadline of 7 June 2026, giving employers a full three-year window to adapt their pay structures and practices. Its requirements, including greater pay transparency, reporting obligations and strengthened workers’ rights, have long been known and discussed.

At the European level, the position is clear. The European Commission expects timely implementation, while the European Trade Union Confederation has opposed any attempts to delay or dilute the directive.

The GWU stresses that this is not a question of time, but of preparedness. Employers have had years to act, and many across Europe have already taken the necessary steps. Any postponement would reward inaction, penalise those who complied, and undermine workers’ rights to fairness and transparency in pay.

The GWU calls on the Government to remain firm and proceed with full and timely transposition within the established deadline. Delaying implementation would signal a lack of commitment to tackling pay inequality.

The GWU reiterates that pay transparency is essential to fairness, equality, and trust in the workplace. Workers in Malta deserve nothing less.
