The General Workers’ Union building has been illuminated in the colours of Rare
Disease Day – blue, green, pink and purple. This day takes place on the last day of
February to raise awareness of the 300 million people around the world living with
rare diseases and to improve access to treatment and medical representation for
these people and their families.
“The GWU has joined forces with The National Alliance for Rare Diseases Support
(Malta) to participate in this special day dedicated to those among us who, as people
living with rare diseases, do not have a voice. As a union we always insist that we
represent workers holistically and therefore we feel the need to be helpful in any way
we can, as we are doing with this alliance,” said the GWU General Secretary.
He added that the GWU recognises the hard work of the families of those living with
rare diseases and the National Alliance for Rare Diseases working hand in hand with
them to support them, raise the voice and take all necessary actions for the
advancement of its members.
Founder and President of the National Alliance for Rare Diseases, Michelle Muscat,
thanked the GWU for sponsoring this year’s Global Chain of Lights, which the
Alliance organises every year on Rare Disease Day. She emphasised that the
Alliance will remain the shield and voice of these people who are often the only ones
in our country fighting their particular disease.
