Reaction by GWU President Jason Deguara to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s State of the Union address

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s State of the Union address comes at a critical moment for Europe, which is facing significant economic, social and geopolitical challenges.

In an initial reaction on behalf of the General Workers’ Union (GWU), GWU President Jason Deguara stressed that Europe’s response to these challenges must place workers at the heart of its economic and industrial strategy.

“We welcome the attention given to jobs and skills. However, competitiveness and technological transformation must go hand in hand with quality jobs, fair wages, strong social protection and effective social dialogue,” Deguara said.

He emphasised that the digital and green transitions are fundamentally reshaping the world of work. These changes must therefore be fair and inclusive, supported by adequate investment in training, upskilling and reskilling workers.

“Europe cannot measure its success solely through economic growth, competitiveness or technological advancement. European resilience and prosperity must translate into greater security, dignity and opportunities for workers and their families,” the GWU President continued.

Deguara also reiterated the importance of social dialogue and the effective participation of trade unions in the development and implementation of European policies. He stressed that decisions directly affecting workers must be taken with the contribution and involvement of their representatives.

The GWU will continue working towards a Europe that combines competitiveness with social justice and ensures that economic and technological progress leads to decent work, better working conditions and a higher quality of life for all.
