The General Workers’ Union (GWU) is pleased to announce that its International Secretary, Robert Micallef, has been appointed to the Steering Committee of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) project “Trade Unions for Peace.”
As a member of the Steering Committee, Robert Micallef will contribute to shaping the next phase of the project, including preparations for the upcoming Peace & Solidarity Forum, the development of training initiatives, and strengthening cooperation with trade unions and partner organisations.
The ETUC-led initiative aims to reinforce the role of trade unions in promoting peace, social dialogue and social justice. It recognises that workers are often the first to suffer the consequences of wars and conflicts and highlights the important role trade unions play in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, humanitarian response and post-conflict reconstruction.
Commenting on his appointment, Robert Micallef said:
“Peace cannot exist without social justice, dialogue and respect for workers’ rights. It is an honour to represent the GWU and Malta in this important European initiative that promotes solidarity, dialogue and lasting peace.”
The GWU looks forward to continuing its collaboration with the ETUC and its affiliates to strengthen the voice of workers in promoting peace, solidarity and democratic values across Europe and beyond.
