Unions express concern over comments regarding KM Malta Airlines

The General Workers’ Union (GWU), the Union of Cabin Crew (UCC), the Airline Pilots Association Malta (ALPA), and the Association of Airline Engineers Malta (AAE) express their concern regarding the comments made by Finance Minister Clyde Caruana on 6th October 2026, in relation to the situation at KM Malta Airlines.

References to “hidden agendas” and “undercurrents”, suggesting that individuals may be seeking to see the airline fail, risk creating uncertainty among employees at a time when stability, trust and constructive dialogue are particularly important.

The unions believe that any such allegations should be treated with caution. However, should there be any attempts to deliberately undermine the airline or jeopardise its future, these would be a matter of serious concern and would be firmly condemned.

At the heart of this situation are the employees of KM Malta Airlines. These are people who dedicate their time and effort to the airline and whose livelihoods, as well as those of their families, depend on its future.

Behind every discussion about the airline’s future are workers who seek security, stability and clarity about their employment and the well-being of their families. The future of KM Malta Airlines is a matter of national importance and should be approached with responsibility, transparency and mutual respect. Employees should not be left feeling that their legitimate concerns or uncertainty about the future are being viewed with suspicion.

The unions believe that the way forward must be built on open communication, constructive dialogue and a shared commitment to safeguarding the future of the airline and the people who make its operations possible.

Ultimately, the future of KM Malta Airlines and the future of its employees are closely connected. Both deserve the attention and consideration necessary to ensure that decisions taken today provide stability and confidence for tomorrow.
