In a significant meeting at the Presidential Palace, the President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, warmly welcomed the leadership of the General Workers’ Union (GWU) during a courtesy visit. Accompanied by the secretaries from its various sections, the GWU administration engaged in an in-depth discussion on trade unionism and workers’ rights in Malta.
During the meeting, the President and the union representatives explored a variety of issues connected to the evolving role of trade unions in the country. One of the central themes was the ongoing effort to strengthen workers’ rights, a cause the GWU has championed for decades. membership. The GWU leaders explained to the President their belief that such a policy would benefit workers by streamlining the process of unionization and ensuring stronger representation across industries.
