Today we celebrate the International Day of Older Persons. The United Nations marks this special day by encouraging countries to draw attention to and challenge negative stereotypes and misconceptions about older people and aging, and to enable older people to realize their potential.
This day, chosen by the United Nations General Assembly in October 1990, is intended to raise awareness of the impact of an aging population. We want people in society to be able to age with dignity. In addition to the wonderful things older people bring to our lives, a day set aside in their honour reminds us to take the time to be kind and humble in the face of a long life well lived.
The Pensioners Union in the General Workers Union salutes all the elderly on this day dedicated to them and asks that every dignity and respect be given to the elderly in recognition of their many years of service.
While it is necessary to protect the health of our elderly, it is equally important that the elderly themselves participate in prevention and prepare well for the challenges that surround them.
This day also brings into focus the invaluable contribution of all workers, of all classes and professions, who work in all areas of social and health care, essential for an optimal quality of life for the elderly.
