GWU continues to expand its representation in the courier sector

More workers seek Union support for fair, safe and dignified working conditions

The General Workers’ Union (GWU), through its Hospitality and Food Section, has registered further positive developments in the courier sector, as the Department for Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER) has carried out verification processes related to requests for sole union recognition on behalf of employees at WFDM and Twenty 17.

This development reflects the growing trust that workers in this sector are placing in the GWU, as more couriers choose to join the Union to strengthen their collective voice and secure representation that safeguards their rights and interests.

Brian Bonnici, Secretary of the Hospitality and Food Section, welcomed this development and stressed that the GWU’s priority remains to ensure that every worker, regardless of nationality, enjoys fair and dignified working conditions while being protected from all forms of exploitation.

Bonnici also acknowledged the work initiated by Kevin Abela, now Deputy Secretary General of the GWU, who laid the foundations for organising and representing the first couriers within the Union. This work continues to gain momentum as more workers recognise the importance of trade union representation.

Despite these positive developments, challenges remain, including workers who are still without collective representation and resistance from certain companies. Nevertheless, the GWU remains determined to further expand its presence in the sector and continue working to ensure that workers’ rights are respected.

The GWU reiterates its commitment to standing alongside couriers, listening to their concerns and working towards fairer, safer and more dignified working conditions for all.
