GWU calls for recognition of Enemalta workers and responsible energy consumption

During a meeting of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD), the General Workers’ Union (GWU) proposed that Enemalta employees should receive additional compensation in recognition of the work they are carrying out under extreme conditions to ensure a continuous electricity supply to families across Malta.

The proposal was made by GWU Secretary General Kevin Camilleri in comments delivered following the MCESD meeting, which focused on the ongoing investment in Malta’s electricity distribution system.

Camilleri described the meeting as constructive and informative, noting that the Minister for Energy, the Environment and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour, Miriam Dalli, together with Enemalta’s engineers, provided a detailed overview of the extensive work currently being undertaken to strengthen the country’s electricity distribution network.

“The GWU has proposed that Enemalta workers receive additional compensation beyond the provisions of the current collective agreement, in recognition of the exceptional work they are carrying out during this period,” Camilleri said.

He added that Minister Dalli reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to continue investing in the electricity distribution system. Camilleri also highlighted that electricity demand reached a record peak of 741MW in recent days, underlining the increasing pressure on the national grid and the vital role played by Enemalta’s workforce.

The GWU Secretary General also referred to the significant investments currently being made in the sector, including the upgrading of Distribution Centres, the second interconnector project between Malta and Sicily, and the ongoing work related to a planned third interconnector.

Concluding his remarks, Camilleri appealed to the public to use electricity responsibly, stressing that conscious energy consumption can help reduce pressure on the network while supporting the efforts of the workers who continue to provide this essential service under demanding conditions.
