“Economic progress must translate into a better quality of life for workers”

GWU presents its proposals for Budget 2027

The General Workers’ Union (GWU) has put forward a wide-ranging set of proposals for Budget 2027 aimed at improving working conditions, economic security and the quality of life of workers and their families.

Among the key proposals are:

1. Pilot project on a 32-hour working week
A pilot project, accompanied by a study, to assess the impact of a 32-hour working week on work-life balance while maintaining productivity.

2. Reform of the COLA mechanism
COLA should be paid twice a year, in January and June, allowing workers to benefit sooner from compensation for increases in the cost of living.

3. Legal framework for Artificial Intelligence
A strong framework governing the use of AI in the workplace to protect workers’ rights and ensure a fair, transparent and human-centred transition.

4. Energy subsidies
Energy subsidies should remain in place, while exploring a fairer mechanism that takes income and consumption into account and encourages responsible energy use.

5. Greater energy independence
Stronger incentives for families investing in systems that reduce their dependence on the national grid and increase the use of clean energy.

6. More affordable housing
Further measures and incentives to give young people and families greater opportunities to purchase their first home.

7. Active ageing
A more inclusive policy and stronger community support systems to enable older people to continue living independently, safely and with dignity.

These are just some of the proposals forming part of the GWU’s broader package for Budget 2027.

For the GWU, economic progress must be felt in people’s everyday lives – through quality jobs, greater security and a higher standard of living.
