“Citizen participation is crucial”

General Workers’ Union (GWU) Secretary General Kevin Camilleri emphasised the importance of ensuring that every project undertaken is based on dialogue, transparency and the sharing of all necessary information.

Speaking yesterday during a panel discussion at a conference organised by Union Print on citizens, development and the environment, Camilleri stressed that citizen participation is crucial to ensuring more informed and balanced decision-making.

While acknowledging that there is still more to be done, the GWU Secretary General said that considerable progress has been made over the years and that we are moving in the right direction. However, he stressed the need for “full awareness” of what is being done and where we want to go.

Camilleri explained that when we speak about achieving a “balance”, this cannot happen overnight. He therefore reiterated the need for citizens to be better informed and provided with the necessary knowledge to enable them to participate more actively.

“I believe that this progress, particularly today with the tools that technology offers us, can continue to accelerate. These are all tools that help us prepare ourselves to find this balance and continue moving forward,” Camilleri said.

In his concluding remarks, Camilleri thanked the conference organisers and all those who participated. He maintained that addressing issues such as those discussed during the conference “requires courage”.

He also reiterated that the GWU will continue to be present and make its contribution by raising and discussing further issues that directly affect citizens, workers and Maltese society.
