The General Workers’ Union and the European Centre for Peace and Development Sign Groundbreaking MOU

The General Workers’ Union (GWU) has taken a significant step towards enhancing the
skills and competences of its members by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the European Centre for Peace and Development (ECPD) of the University for Peace (UPeace), an institution established by the United Nations. This collaboration aims to provide workers with extensive training opportunities in diplomacy, enabling them to apply for vacancies in the field as they arise.

The MOU was signed by Josef Bugeja, General Secretary of the GWU, and Prof. Paolo
Sabbatini, representing the ECPD/UPeace University and serving as the Ambassador for Cultural Communication between China and Italy. The ceremony also included the presence of Kevin Camilleri, Deputy Secretary General of the GWU, and Riccardo Travaglini, a EURES consultant and Business Developer.

In his remarks following the signing, Mr. Bugeja highlighted the importance of this agreement as a milestone for the union. He emphasized that the MOU will significantly enhance the competences and skills of both Maltese and international workers who utilize the union’s facilities, including its specialized English courses designed for various sectors.

“This agreement represents another significant achievement for the GWU,” said Mr. Bugeja.

“Our goal is to increase the capabilities of workers, promoting peace, wealth, and stability in the lives of citizens. By participating in international forums and sharing ideas, we aim to foster a culture of peace and understanding, benefiting all workers.”
Prof. Sabbatini expressed his strong belief in the synergy between the peace-promoting activities of UPeace and the initiatives of the GWU. He noted that this MOU is just the beginning of a closer working relationship aimed at building peace through academic research and collaborative efforts.

“The collaboration between the ECPD/UPeace and GWU is founded on a shared vision of peace and development,” Prof. Sabbatini stated. “We are committed to working together to achieve our common goals and look forward to the positive outcomes of this partnership.”

The agreement underscores the commitment of both organizations to not only improve professional skills but also to contribute to global peace efforts, marking a significant advancement in the training and development opportunities available to workers through the GWU.
