“Supporting those most in need in society”

GWU holds meeting with Minister Owen Bonnici

General Workers’ Union (GWU) Secretary General Kevin Camilleri stated that the Union, together with the Ministry for Social and Affordable Accommodation and Lands, will do everything possible to continue supporting those who are most vulnerable in Maltese society.

Camilleri made these remarks following a meeting between the GWU Central Administration and the Minister for Social and Affordable Accommodation and Lands, Owen Bonnici.

The meeting, which took place at the Workers’ Memorial Building, formed part of an ongoing series of meetings between the GWU and members of the Cabinet and Parliamentary Secretaries. Camilleri described the discussion as cordial and constructive, focusing on issues related to social and affordable housing.

He stressed that these are matters of significant national importance and also referred to the ongoing digital transition, emphasising that it must be fair and inclusive, as the GWU has consistently advocated, including during the International Labour Conference. He noted that people in the most disadvantaged sectors of society must not be left behind as Malta continues to modernise.

Camilleri added that discussions with the Ministry will continue in the months ahead with the aim of improving the quality of life of Maltese families and identifying practical solutions that strengthen social inclusion and access to affordable housing.

Speaking after the meeting, Minister Owen Bonnici said that it is impossible to shape future policy on social and affordable housing without engaging with the GWU. He described the Union as an organisation that upholds important social democratic values and stressed that maintaining regular dialogue is essential.

The Minister said that through continued collaboration, both parties can develop initiatives that provide practical solutions and contribute to a fairer and more inclusive housing sector.

Also representing the GWU at the meeting were President Jason Deguara, Deputy Secretary General Kevin Abela, and Government, Public Entities and Health Section Secretary Kendrick Bondin.

Minister Bonnici was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary within the Ministry for Social and Affordable Accommodation and Lands, Ramon Deguara.
