“Society should recognize the importance of MCESD and get involved”

Architect David Xuereb had a cordial meeting yesterday with the central administration of the General Workers’ Union. This meeting took place after Architect Xuereb was appointed Chairman of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) and because GWU is one of the social partners within the Council.

In his comments, the MCESD chairman said the work being done within the council is research-driven and convergent, while providing value to society at large, even making recommendations to the government.

“We need to work more and more to make sure that the information on each issue is timely and relevant so that we as social partners can get real value out of it,” said architect Xuereb, who also pointed to the need to reach out more to people through the social partners so that what they are told is brought before the MCESD and considered there.

For his part, the general secretary of GWU, Josef Bugeja, said that the union agrees with the vision of the chairman of MCESD, stressing that social dialogue is one of the most important tools for success in our country.

“This is also evident from the discussions that are taking place, from the proposals of the social partners that will eventually be included in the budget. Discussions on other issues such as health and safety at work. The next step is for our society to recognize the importance of MCESD and participate in it,” affirmed the Secretary General of GWU.

Also present at the meeting, held at the Workers’ Memorial Building, was GWU Deputy Secretary Kevin Camilleri.
