The General Workers’ Union and the Ministry for Natoinal Affairs and Home Security engaged in a cordial meeting to discuss the incidents that occurred last Sunday in the Ħal Far Open Centre, and the present. situation regarding the Agency for the Welfare of Asylum Seekers (AWAS)’s workers.
During the meeting, both the GWU and the Ministry agreed on the need for more security for the AWAS workers, as well as the residents in the centres operated by the same agency. Both sides will remain in contact on the implementation of these improvements.
The GWU delegation was led by the Segretary General Josef Bugeja, the GWU Government and Public Entity Section Secretary Kendrick Bondin, and the GWU Disciplinary Corps, Security and Law Enforcement Officials Section Theo Vella, as well as the GWU representatives within the Agency. From the Ministry’s side, the delegation was led by the Permanent Secretary Mr Kevin Mahoney, and AWAS CEO Mauro Farrugia.
