Four-year agreement delivers improvements in pay, career progression, working hours and allowances

The Maritime and Aviation Section within the General Workers’ Union (GWU) has signed a new Collective Agreement for employees of Lufthansa Technik Malta, covering the period from 2026 to 2029.

This four-year agreement builds on previous achievements and introduces tangible improvements in working conditions, reflecting the GWU’s continued commitment to securing better conditions for its members through dialogue and collective bargaining.

Among the key achievements of the agreement are improved wages, better career progression opportunities, reduced working hours, greater flexibility and improved allowances.

Strong approval from employees

GWU Maritime and Aviation Section Secretary Jurgen Azzopardi explained that, prior to the signing of the agreement, the Section organised meetings with employees from each department to explain in detail the proposed changes and new conditions.

During these meetings, GWU members were also given the opportunity to vote on the approval of the agreement. The result showed very strong support for the new Collective Agreement.

Azzopardi stressed that this result reflects employees’ confidence in the negotiation process and in the work carried out to reach an agreement that responds to their needs.

The GWU also acknowledged the cooperation of Lufthansa Technik Malta throughout the negotiation process and appreciated the company’s willingness to engage in constructive discussions with the Union to reach an agreement that further improves employees’ working conditions.

Section Secretary Jurgen Azzopardi thanked everyone involved in the process, particularly all Committee members for their contribution throughout the negotiations, as well as Rita Dimech, Secretary of the GWU’s Chemical and Energy Section, who also took part in the negotiations.

A shared commitment to employees and the company’s future

Lufthansa Technik Malta Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Maria Cilia, described the signing of the Collective Agreement as an important milestone for the company and its employees.

“The signing of this new four-year Collective Agreement with the General Workers’ Union, covering the period from 2026 to 2029, marks an important milestone for Lufthansa Technik Malta and our employees.

Together, we are building a stronger future for our employees, our customers and Lufthansa Technik Malta as one of Malta’s leading aviation maintenance companies and within the Lufthansa Technik network,” Engineer Cilia said.

Collective bargaining delivers tangible improvements

The GWU stated that this agreement demonstrates the value of social dialogue and collective bargaining as essential tools for achieving better working conditions.

The agreement represents a positive outcome for Lufthansa Technik Malta employees and another step forward in the Union’s ongoing work to safeguard the interests of its members and improve their quality of life.

The Collective Agreement was signed by Jurgen Azzopardi, Secretary of the GWU Maritime and Aviation Section, and Angelo Psaila, GWU Shop Steward.

On behalf of Lufthansa Technik Malta, the agreement was signed by Marcus Motschenbacher, Chairman; Engineer Maria Cilia, Chief Executive Officer; and Ramona Galea, Head of People and Culture.
