GWU secures sole recognition for Waste Management Officers at Mater Dei Hospital

The Government, Public Entities and Health Section of the General Workers’ Union (GWU) has officially obtained sole union recognition as the representative of the majority of Waste Management Officers employed within the Waste Management Department at Mater Dei Hospital, following a verification process conducted by the Department of Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER).

The verification process was initiated following a formal request submitted by the GWU seeking sole recognition for the purposes of collective bargaining on behalf of these employees.

According to the official DIER verification report, it was confirmed that the GWU represents the majority of employees engaged as Waste Management Officers within the Waste Management Department at Mater Dei Hospital, excluding Senior Management grades.

This outcome reflects the confidence that these workers have placed in the GWU and its commitment to safeguarding their rights and advancing their interests through effective representation.

The Government, Public Entities and Health Section welcomed the result and thanked the Waste Management Officers for the trust they have placed in the Union.

The recognition achieved today is an important milestone that strengthens our ability to represent these workers effectively. The GWU remains committed to working closely with them through constructive social dialogue and collective bargaining to improve their working conditions, protect their rights and promote their wellbeing.
