The General Workers’ Union (GWU), through its Section for Disciplined Bodies,
Security Officers, and Law Enforcement, has achieved primary recognition for
soldiers within the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM). This recognition follows a
substantial recruitment effort, during which a majority of AFM soldiers joined the
union, prompting an official audit by the Department of Industrial and Employment
Relations (DIER).
The DIER’s verification process confirmed that over 62% of the AFM’s enlisted
soldiers are now members of the GWU. This support secures union representation
for various ranks within the AFM, including Gunner, Lance Bombardier, Bombardier,
Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, Warrant Officer II, Warrant Officer I, 2nd Lieutenant,
Lieutenant, Captain, and Major. Members of the Volunteer Reserve Force (VRF and
VRF FS) are also included under this recognition.
With this official endorsement, the GWU is set to begin negotiations for a new
sectoral agreement in the coming weeks. This agreement aims to enhance working
conditions for soldiers, focusing on improving the financial package and other
benefits.
Theo Vella, Secretary of the GWU Section, expressed gratitude to all committee
members and soldier members for their support. He emphasized that this trust will
fuel the union’s ongoing efforts to benefit soldiers and their families, marking a
significant step forward for those serving in the AFM.
