The Government and Public Entities section of the General Workers’ Union (GWU) held a comprehensive training session yesterday, aimed at raising awareness about gender and sexual orientation in the workplace. The session, led by the Directorate for Human Rights, took place at the GWU headquarters in Valletta.
The training, which addressed various challenges and realities faced by LGBTIQ+
individuals, was also open to shop stewards from different sections. Secretary of the section, Kendrick Bondin, explained that this initiative was an important step in fostering a more inclusive environment across workplaces.
“These realities exist in every workplace,” Bondin said in a statement. “It was important that this training be available to everyone. We reviewed legal requirements, fair and ethical practices, and discussed real-life examples of how to handle these situations.”
In addition to covering legal and ethical frameworks, the session provided attendees with information on support systems for LGBTIQ+ individuals who might face challenges in the workplace. Bondin emphasized that assistance is available not only through the GWU but also through specialized centers equipped to deal with specific situations.
The training session is part of GWU’s ongoing efforts to promote equality, both within its own structure and across various workplaces. By doing so, the union aims to raise awareness about equality policies and further encourage their adoption Josef Bugeja, Secretary of the GWU, attended the training alongside secretaries from other sections, underlining the union’s collective commitment to these important issues.
