VALLETTA, MALTA, 30 August 2025: Following yesterday’s announcement of the phased closure of the Carlo Gavazzi plant in Bulebel, the General Workers’ Union (GWU) has mobilised an immediate action plan to support all affected employees.
The union has already initiated discussions with several Government entities, including the Ministry for the Economy and Malta Enterprise, to formulate a robust transition and employment integration strategy. Simultaneously, since the news of the closure broke, several private companies have already approached the GWU with the clear intention of offering employment to the skilled workforce.
“The immediate interest from other companies is clear proof that the Carlo Gavazzi workers possess highly valued and sought-after skills in the Maltese labour market,” said GWU Secretary General Josef Bugeja. “We are actively working to ensure that every worker is presented with an alternative role or a new opportunity that respects their dignity and experience.”
David Darmanin, Secretary of the Technology, Electronics and Communications Section, added: “Immediately following the meeting with the company, our priority was to engage with the workers’ representatives. We are building a clear process, step-by-step, to support every affected employee and ensure their voice is central to this consultation.”
The GWU will continue to place the workers at the heart of the process, working tirelessly to connect them with new employment and, where necessary, with retraining programmes.
