General Workers’ Union Condemns Actions Targeting PBS Workers Amid Budget Advertising Dispute

The General Workers’ Union (GWU) has strongly condemned any actions that may
undermine or target the workers of PBS, following a legal dispute involving political
advertising aired on the national broadcaster. The GWU issued a statement this
week in response to a case brought by the Nationalist Party (PN), which accused
PBS of airing political content in violation of broadcasting regulations.

The controversy began when the PN filed a court injunction, asserting that PBS had
unlawfully broadcast political advertisements related to the Budget on the eve of its
announcement. The party sought urgent court intervention to stop the broadcasts
and secure an appropriate remedy. Despite the injunction being accepted by the
court, the PN alleged that PBS continued to air the advertisements in question,
prompting the party to request further legal measures.

The GWU, through a statement by Riccarda Darmanin, Secretary of the
Professionals, Finances, and Services Section, expressed concern over the potential
repercussions for PBS workers involved in the case. Darmanin emphasized that the
union would not tolerate any actions that unfairly target employees fulfilling their
professional duties and confirmed that the GWU stands ready to offer legal
assistance to any member worker who may face consequences as a result.

“We deplore and condemn any action against workers who are performing their duty,
especially in a context where some may even be called to court,” Darmanin said. “As
a trade union, we have already pledged our support, including legal aid, to any of our
member workers affected by this situation.”

The GWU’s statement reflects the union’s commitment to safeguarding the interests
of workers while urging for fair and balanced resolution in the ongoing legal matter.
