In a significant meeting at the Presidential Palace, the President of Malta, Myriam Spiteri Debono, warmly welcomed the leadership of the General Workers’ Union (GWU) during a courtesy visit. Accompanied by the secretaries from its various sections, the GWU administration engaged in an in-depth discussion on trade unionism and workers’ rights in Malta.
During the meeting, the President and the union representatives explored a variety of issues connected to the evolving role of trade unions in the country. One of the central themes was the ongoing effort to strengthen workers’ rights, a cause the GWU has championed for decades. Both sides emphasized the importance of ensuring workplaces in Malta remain not only economically viable but also socially sustainable.
A particularly notable discussion point was the union’s advocacy for automatic union
membership. The GWU leaders explained to the President their belief that such a policy would benefit workers by streamlining the process of unionization and ensuring stronger representation across industries.
The courtesy visit underscored the collaborative relationship between the office of the
President and the GWU as they continue to push for improved labour conditions and a more equitable society. President Spiteri Debono expressed her support for initiatives that aim to create fairer workplaces while fostering economic growth.
This meeting signals a continued commitment to the advancement of workers’ rights in
Malta, particularly at a time when labour dynamics are shifting rapidly across Europe.
