The General Workers’ Union (GWU), through its Government and Public Entities
Section, has successfully secured the official recognition of employees working in
the printing grades sector at the Government Printing Press.
This recognition comes following a verification process conducted by the Department
of Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER). The DIER’s review confirmed that
most workers in this sector are unionized members of the GWU, highlighting the
union’s continued presence and influence in safeguarding workers’ rights.
The process was initiated after it was noted that a significant portion of the workforce
recognized the advantages of aligning with the country’s largest union,
acknowledging its role in advocating for improved working conditions.
With official recognition now in place, the next step for the GWU is to enter
negotiations with the management of the Government Printing Press. These
discussions aim to establish a new Sectoral Agreement that will enhance the terms
and conditions for workers in the printing grades, ensuring better work environments
and increased protections.
The GWU’s achievement further solidifies its reputation as a key player in labour
relations, particularly within government sectors, and demonstrates its ongoing
commitment to representing and improving the lives of its members.
