The Maritime and Aviation Section within the General Workers’ Union has announced that it is entering a new phase in the industrial dispute with Transport Malta and will take industrial actions to defend the democratic will of the workers.
Despite several attempts to address the issue through constructive dialogue, including the intervention of the Department of Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER), the demands of the members are continuing to be ignored.
The Secretary of the Section, Jurgen Azzopardi, stressed that the GWU will remain committed to a fair solution but cannot allow members’ rights and demands to be ignored. These actions follow a previous phase of negotiations that did not lead to a concrete solution, and therefore, the GWU had no other option but to order industrial actions for its members.
The Maritime and Aviation Section reiterates that this dispute is not related to financial claims or working conditions but is based on the right of workers to choose who represents them freely. The GWU acknowledges that these industrial actions may affect some services and apologises for the inconvenience, but says it is a necessary step to look after its members and protect their rights under labour law.
