GWU strengthens its presence in the education sector with new recognition at Queen Mary University of London Malta Campus

The Professionals, Finance and Services Section of the General Workers’ Union (GWU) has officially been granted recognition to represent employees at Queen Mary University of London, Malta Campus.

This milestone reflects the strong support shown by the majority of professional service section employees who have chosen to join the GWU, reinforcing the union’s commitment to protecting workers’ rights and advancing their interests within this sector.

The recognition follows a process in which most employees registered as GWU members. Subsequently, the Department of Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER) conducted a verification exercise, confirming that the majority of the workforce is unionised with the GWU.

As a result, the GWU now holds a clear mandate to enter into discussions with the institution’s management, to negotiate a Collective Agreement aimed at enhancing working conditions, reinforcing job security and ensuring equitable treatment for all employees.

Commenting on this development, Section Secretary Riccarda Darmanin stated that the GWU remains dedicated to engaging in constructive and responsible dialogue to reach outcomes that benefit both employees and the long-term sustainability of the institution.
