National conference highlights the work needed for successful implementation across Europe.
The General Workers’ Union (GWU) was represented at a major European conference in Paris, France, marking the conclusion of a two-day event focused on the Pay Transparency Project. The conference, organized by Eurocadres, brought together representatives from seven European countries to present the findings of a comprehensive survey conducted as part of the initiative.
Riccarda Darmanin, Secretary of the GWU’s Professionals, Finance and Services Section, attended the congress and contributed to discussions on how Malta is preparing to implement the EU directive on pay transparency. As part of the project, GWU had previously hosted a local conference at the Workers’ Memorial Building in Malta, inviting Eurocadres to share insights and engage with Maltese stakeholders.
The final report from the survey emphasizes the tools needed by professionals across Europe to support the transposition and effective implementation of pay transparency measures at the national level. It also explores the practical application of the principle of equal pay for equal work and assesses the effectiveness of current transparency mechanisms.
During her intervention, Darmanin provided an overview of Malta’s economic situation and the GWU’s ongoing efforts. She noted that Malta’s unemployment rate remains low, which is reflected in competitive salaries and a strong demand for professional talent.
“The GWU’s work is evident in the collective agreements negotiated with Maltese companies and authorities,” Darmanin said. “We ensure clauses that support families and improve working conditions are included.”
However, Darmanin also highlighted a growing concern: long working hours are contributing to mental fatigue and, in some cases, depression among workers.
The conference concluded with the participation of Assistant Secretary Cynthia Schembri, who joined Darmanin in representing the GWU.
