GWU and the Italian Embassy strengthen dialogue on workers and educational opportunities

A meeting between the General Workers’ Union (GWU) and the Italian Ambassador to Malta focused on strengthening cooperation in areas related to workers and education.

The meeting was held between the Secretary General of the General Workers’ Union, Josef Bugeja, and the Italian Ambassador to Malta, Her Excellency Valentina Setta. Discussions centred on further enhancing bilateral relations between Malta and Italy, particularly through initiatives that support workers and strengthen educational opportunities.

During the meeting, Bugeja highlighted the role played by the GWU in contributing to the social and economic development of Maltese society, noting that the union’s work extends beyond traditional industrial relations. He referred to the educational courses offered through the language school UNILANG, as well as specialised training programmes developed in line with labour market needs. These initiatives are delivered through the Malta Training and Resource Centre (MTRM) with the aim of enhancing workers’ skills and competencies while promoting a more inclusive society.

The discussion also explored opportunities for closer collaboration between the two sides to advance shared objectives, including matters concerning Italian workers residing and working in Malta and the well-being of their families.

Ambassador Setta was accompanied by the Consul, Santo Purello. Also present at the meeting were Riccardo Travaglini, EURES Consultant and Business Developer within the GWU, and Savannah Davies, Chief Executive Officer of UNILANG.
