The General Workers’ Union has registered an industrial dispute with Transport Malta after the Authority failed to acknowledge the wishes of the majority of workers in a specific section who want to be represented by the GWU.
This dispute does not involve financial claims or working conditions but is solely concerned with the fundamental right of workers to choose their representatives freely.
Despite efforts to resolve this issue through constructive dialogue, Transport Malta has not yet taken any concrete steps. As a result, the GWU has involved the Department of Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER) to ensure that the process follows the proper procedures in accordance with labour law.
Jurgen Azzopardi, the Section Secretary, stated that the GWU is committed to finding a fair solution. However, it cannot accept the ongoing disregard for the democratic wishes of the workers.
Therefore, the GWU reserves the right to take any necessary actions, including industrial action, to defend the voice of its members and ensure that their demands are addressed.
