“The world of work is changing rapidly. Digitalization is creating new employment models that offer flexibility, but at the same time, it brings great uncertainty,” said Kevin Abela, who was appointed International Secretary at the National Congress of the General Workers’ Union after previously serving as Secretary of the Hospitality and Food Section.
He emphasized that one of the biggest challenges is platform work, and it is the responsibility of all the secretaries to ensure that anyone working through an app or digital platform is regarded as a worker with full rights, social protection, and fair wages—not just a number in an algorithm.
As a new member of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), he will be closely involved with European directives that regulate this sector.
“Our presence in Brussels is crucial to ensuring that the right to disconnect and the ethical use of artificial intelligence in the workplace become a reality for Maltese workers. We will not allow digitalization to serve as an excuse for new precariousness,” said Secretary Abela.
He concluded by stating that through his new role, he will continue to advocate for European legislation that protects the most vulnerable and provides peace of mind to families in this evolving economy.
