Disciplinary Corps, Security and Law Enforcement Officials

In February 2015, members of the armed forces were granted the right to join a union of their choice. This meant that members of the Armed Forces of Malta, prison officers, and civil defense officers had the right to negotiate better working conditions like other workers. Workers in these sectors organized and joined the GWU, so the GWU administration decided it was time to open another chapter to bring these workers together.
In October 2017, at the General Conference, Josef Bugeja, the Secretary General, announced that a section for the armed forces would be established. This would be known as the Disciplinary Corps, Security and Law Enforcement Officials Section. This section includes police, soldiers, prison officers, civil defense officers, detention officers, community officers, and security officers. Some of the workers mentioned are already covered by collective/sectoral agreements negotiated by the GWU. Other negotiations are ongoing and will be concluded soon.
