Reduction in Fiscal Deficit: A Significant Step for Maltese Workers and Society – Josef Bugeja

The General Workers’ Union (GWU) has welcomed the news of a reduction in
Malta’s fiscal deficit with optimism, describing it as a pivotal moment for workers and
society. According to Josef Bugeja, Secretary General of the GWU, Malta’s economy
has demonstrated resilience despite challenging global circumstances, including war
and geopolitical shifts. He emphasized the importance of the government collecting
what is owed and supporting those in need.

Bugeja highlighted that this fiscal improvement has been achieved without
introducing austerity measures. Instead, Malta has experienced economic growth,
with the wealth generated being shared among the Maltese population, leading to an
enhanced quality of life. This progress is reflected in reduced income tax and
increased social benefits.

“It’s worth noting that this reduction in the fiscal deficit is happening while the
government continues to subsidize electricity, water, fuel, and cereals,” Bugeja
stated.

He further praised the government’s prudent and serious efforts, which have led to a
significant reduction in Malta’s deficit, exceeding expectations. “We believe that
through collective responsibility, we can continue to strengthen the country’s finances
for the benefit of citizens, ensuring a brighter future for ourselves and our children,”
Bugeja concluded.
