GWU Recognized as Representative for Malta Philharmonic Orchestra Musicians

The General Workers’ Union (GWU) has officially secured recognition as the
representative body for musicians of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. This
development marks a significant step for professional musicians, ensuring stronger
advocacy and enhanced workplace conditions under GWU’s guidance.

Transition to GWU Representation

Following the dissolution of the Professionals and Services Employees’ Union,
former members sought representation within GWU’s Professionals, Finance, and
Services Section. This transition led to a verification process conducted by the
Department of Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER), which confirmed that
the majority of Malta Philharmonic Orchestra musicians are registered and
contributing members of the GWU.

Riccarda Darmanin, Secretary of the section, expressed appreciation for the
contributions of Karmenu Vella to professional musicians, extending heartfelt wishes
upon his retirement.

Future Negotiations and Improved Conditions

With the existing collective agreement approaching its expiration, GWU is preparing
for negotiations with the orchestra’s administration. The union aims to secure
improved working conditions for musicians, ensuring their rights and professional
well-being remain a priority.

Meanwhile, GWU has already initiated support services, focusing on health
protection and workers’ rights. This move reinforces the union’s commitment to the
welfare of its members, establishing a foundation for more comprehensive
agreements in the future.

As the transition unfolds, GWU’s recognition signifies a pivotal moment for the
musicians of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, promising greater stability and
advocacy under its representation.
