Valletta – The General Workers’ Union (GWU) has welcomed and endorsed the Affordable Housing initiative launched jointly by the Government of Malta and the Archdiocese of Malta. The scheme, led by the Affordable Housing Foundation, is being hailed as a much-needed social measure aimed at providing dignified access to housing at fair and affordable prices for families and individuals with modest or low incomes.
For too long, many Maltese workers and their families have found themselves trapped in the so-called “stretched class” — earning just above the threshold for social housing, yet unable to afford property on the open market. This initiative seeks to bridge that gap by offering homes priced up to 30% below market value, based on a model that prioritizes the common good over profit.
The GWU has consistently maintained that housing is not a privilege but a fundamental right. Safe and affordable homes are essential for family stability, worker well-being, and social justice. The union praised the collaborative effort between the Government and the Archdiocese, emphasizing that when institutions work together in the national interest, tangible solutions can be achieved for the most vulnerable members of society.
This initiative not only offers relief to families struggling to find decent housing but also reinforces the principle of solidarity — a cornerstone of both trade unionism and Malta’s social fabric. The GWU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting measures that protect vulnerable families and advance the rights and dignity of workers and their loved ones.
