The General Workers’ Union (GWU) has achieved official recognition at the Malta
Courts Agency through the efforts of its Government, Public Entities, and Health
Section. This milestone comes after a rigorous verification process conducted by the
Department of Industrial and Employment Relations (DIER), confirming that 55% of
the agency’s employees are registered GWU members.
The path to recognition has been marked by challenges. Despite the long duration of
the verification request process, the GWU demonstrated resilience, navigating
obstacles and persevering for the rights of its members.
Deputy Secretary General Kevin Camilleri expressed his gratitude for the support
shown by the employees, stating, “This recognition not only confirms the strong
support of employees towards the GWU, but also places a burden of responsibility
on the GWU to continue strengthening the protection of workers’ rights in our Courts.
Now, following this result, full work begins to conclude a Collective Agreement to
continue to substantially improve workers’ benefits and wages.”
The GWU affirmed its unwavering commitment to advocating for its members,
ensuring that their rights are upheld, and their interests are protected. It stressed that
this recognition is just the beginning, with efforts now focused on negotiating a
Collective Agreement aimed at significantly enhancing employee benefits and
wages.
This achievement underscores the critical role of unions in safeguarding workers’
rights and serves as a testament to the collective power of employees united under
the GWU banner.
