Brian Bonnici appointed Secretary of the GWU Hospitality and Food Section
“Working in the union as a trade unionist means viewing it not just as a job, but as a vocation with a mission that requires you to listen and empathize,” said Brian Bonnici, the new Secretary of the GWU Hospitality and Food Section, in a speech delivered after his appointment at an Extraordinary Section Conference held on Wednesday afternoon at the Workers’ Memorial Building in Valletta.
Bonnici succeeds Kevin Abela, who has led this Section for the past three years, successfully negotiating and concluding numerous collective agreements for the Section’s workers. Abela has now been appointed as International Secretary during the GWU National Congress.
In his remarks, Bonnici expressed his gratitude, stating, “It is both a satisfaction and an honor to be entrusted with this position. This mission has been shaped by my 34 years of involvement with the GWU across various areas, including newspapers, union media, and organizational responsibilities.
“Having served as Assistant Secretary of the Government and Public Entities Section for the past two years, I am eager to contribute to the Hospitality and Food Section. I believe the years ahead will present both opportunities and challenges. My commitment is to continue advocating for Maltese and Gozitan workers, as well as for all workers living and contributing to our country, irrespective of their origin. This is the mission of the GWU—promoting the interests and advancement of all workers,” Bonnici reiterated.
The conference also featured remarks from GWU Secretary General Josef Bugeja, who emphasized the importance of collective efforts over individual pursuits. He noted that, in a recent interview, he highlighted that no one is greater than the organization itself. Bugeja reaffirmed that the GWU does not only defend workers but also strives to help them achieve their aspirations. “Listening is valuable. Understanding and having empathy is even better,” Bugeja stated. He concluded by expressing gratitude to Kevin Abela for his contributions during his tenure and wished Bonnici success in his new role.
Meanwhile, former Secretary Kevin Abela reflected on his time leading the Hospitality and Food Section, noting that significant progress had been made with the support of everyone involved. He cited several achievements, including an agreement with the Malta Delivery Fleet Operators’ Association, which will enhance the rights and working conditions of food couriers. As a result of this agreement, approximately 1,500 new workers will be welcomed into the Section. Abela congratulated Bonnici on his appointment, expressing confidence that the Section has a bright future ahead. He also thanked the GWU central administration, all Section Secretaries, and other officers and workers within the union for their efforts.
