A significant victory for the GWU at the Marina Palace Home
Justice for two carers after years of exploitation

After a long and challenging process, the General Workers’ Union (GWU) successfully advocated for two of its members, who worked as carers at the Marina Palace Home, resulting in a court ruling that ordered the payment of all wages owed to them, which they had been unjustly denied. This decision represents a significant victory for the GWU and, more importantly, serves as a step toward justice for the workers who had faced abuse.

The GWU believes this ruling sends a strong message against all forms of abuse, exploitation, and injustice, particularly regarding foreign workers in the private sector of elderly care. The case has been ongoing since 2022, stemming from the exploitation and disregard for the basic rights of the two carers employed at the Marina Palace Home. For months, they had not received their full wages and were instead given only a fraction of what they were owed. The management’s neglect at Marina Palace Home had a severe impact on the workers, making it difficult for them to maintain a decent standard of living.

Despite repeatedly receiving empty promises from management that their full wages would be paid, the situation did not improve. Finally, the workers found the courage to approach the GWU for assistance, hoping to reclaim their rightful earnings and put an end to the abusive treatment.

The GWU stepped in promptly, through its Government, Public Entities, and Health Section, providing legal support, particularly from lawyer Dr. Whitney Turner. The legal process was complex and lengthy, facing various administrative obstacles along the way.

The GWU is pleased that a judgment has now been delivered, bringing justice to the affected workers. This case underscores the importance of having a strong union and a skilled legal team on the side of workers, proving that justice can prevail even in the face of daunting challenges. The GWU encourages anyone who feels they have been abused to come forward and seek help without hesitation.
